Acupuncture for Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow ( or lateral epicondylitis) is characterized by pain around the outside of the elbow. It often occurs after strenuous overuse of the muscles and tendons of the forearm, near the elbow joint.

You may notice pain:

  • on the outside of your upper forearm, just below the bend of your elbow
  • when lifting or bending your arm
  • when gripping small objects, such as a pen
  • when twisting your forearm, such as turning a door handle or opening a jar

You may also find it difficult to fully extend your arm.

Acupuncture (and especially electro-acupuncture combined with an infra-red lamp) can improve muscle stiffness and joint mobility by increasing local microcirculation, which aids dispersal of swelling. It is an excellent alternative to steroid injection.

As listed on the NLM website (National Library of Medicine), the primary medical resource of the United States government, are reports from trials evaluating acupuncture’s effect on specific conditions. You can find the trial about Tennis Elbow here. This trial showed  that acupuncture very effectively reduced pain and improved physical function of the elbow.
